Ledger review: the most available wallet in New Zealand
Ledger makes the cheapest credible cold storage you can buy, the best companion app in the category, and the only devices reliably stocked at a Kiwi address. It also asks you to trust closed firmware from a company that has leaked its customer list twice.

Who Ledger is actually for
Ledger occupies an unusual position in this market. It is simultaneously the brand most likely to be recommended by someone who has never owned a hardware wallet, and the brand most likely to be criticised by someone who has owned three. Both reactions are defensible, and understanding why is the most useful thing you can take from this review.
The case for is concrete. The Nano S Plus costs US$59 from Ledger, or NZ$99 delivered inside New Zealand from GROOV in Christchurch. It contains an ST33K1M5 secure element certified to Common Criteria EAL6+, which is the highest assurance level in consumer hardware wallets and the same class of chip used in passports and bank cards. That chip is not the cheap part of the device made cheaper — it is the identical component Ledger puts in the US$249 Flex. And Ledger Live, the companion application, is genuinely the best software in this category: it handles firmware updates, portfolio views, staking and coin management in a way that does not require you to understand derivation paths.
The case against is equally concrete and it is about trust rather than engineering. The code running on that certified chip is closed. Ledger has had two customer data exposures. And the company demonstrated, during the Ledger Recover episode, that the firmware could do things users had assumed it structurally could not. None of that means your keys are at risk. All of it means the security model requires you to trust a company's assertions, which is precisely the thing the open-source camp built its products to avoid.

The 2026 lineup, and which one to actually buy
Ledger sells five devices and the differences between them are almost entirely about screen and connectivity rather than security. That is worth stating plainly, because the pricing implies otherwise.
The Nano S Plus at US$59 is the value proposition of the entire hardware wallet market. EAL6+ secure element, USB-C, a small monochrome screen and two buttons. No battery, no Bluetooth. Those omissions are not security downgrades — if anything, fewer radios means a smaller attack surface — they are convenience omissions. This is the device we would buy.
The Nano X at US$99 adds Bluetooth, a battery and iPhone support, and is the one genuine anomaly in the range: it still ships with the older ST33J2M0 chip certified to EAL5+ rather than the EAL6+ part in the cheaper model. You are paying forty dollars more for wireless convenience and a slightly older secure element. If you need Bluetooth for mobile use, consider the Gen5 instead.
The Nano Gen5, launched at Ledger's Op3n event in 2025 and priced at US$179, is the interesting one. A 2.8-inch monochrome E-ink touchscreen at 300 by 400 pixels, USB-C, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, 1.5MB of app storage and around ten hours of battery. A Ledger Recovery Key comes in the box. The E-ink screen makes address verification genuinely easier than squinting at a two-line OLED, which is a real security benefit rather than a cosmetic one. If you have the budget and you will verify addresses often, this is a defensible upgrade.
The Flex at US$249 shares the Gen5's EAL6+ ST33K1M5 and adds Qi wireless charging alongside Bluetooth, NFC and USB-C. The Stax, at around US$399, has a 3.7-inch curved E-ink touchscreen at 400 by 670 and a magnetic body. Both are lovely objects. Neither is more secure than the NZ$99 device, and we would struggle to recommend either to someone protecting less than a very substantial holding.
The pricing insight worth having
Across Ledger's range, more money buys you a better screen, more radios and nicer materials. It does not buy you a better secure element — the NZ$99 Nano S Plus and the US$249 Flex use the same certified chip. If you are choosing between models on security grounds, you are choosing between things that are identical on that axis.
Ledger Live: the best software in the category
We score interface quality at 25% of our grade, and this is where Ledger earns most of its 8.9. Having used every major companion app, Ledger Live is the only one we would hand to a complete beginner without supervision.
The things it does well are unglamorous and matter enormously. Firmware updates are a guided process rather than an act of faith. Adding a coin is a search box, not a derivation path. Receiving funds shows you the address on the device screen and asks you to confirm it matches, which is exactly the ritual that defeats clipboard-swapping malware. Transaction history is legible. Staking for supported chains is a few taps and the delegation is signed on the device. The mobile app pairs over Bluetooth on the X, Gen5, Flex and Stax and does not feel like a compromised version of the desktop experience.
Two criticisms. The app has grown a substantial amount of commercial surface — buy, sell, swap and earn panels from third-party partners — which is not dangerous but does mean the interface pushes transactions at you. And the swap rates available inside it are generally not the best available; check them against a market price before accepting, the same advice we give about Exodus. The two data breaches, and what they actually mean
This is the part of the Ledger story most reviews either ignore or overstate, so we want to be precise. Neither incident involved a private key, a recovery phrase, or any cryptographic material. Both involved customer records, and the consequence was physical rather than digital.
In July 2020, an unauthorised party accessed Ledger's e-commerce and marketing database through a third-party API on the company's website. Approximately 270,000 customers had names, email addresses, phone numbers and physical postal addresses exposed, along with more than a million email addresses. The data was sold privately and then dumped publicly in December 2020.
What followed is why it belongs in a security review. Ledger reported shutting down 171 phishing sites in the two months after the leak. Customers received extortion letters demanding US$700 to US$1,000 in Bitcoin under threat of doxxing or physical harm. And in 2021, some owners received unsolicited counterfeit Ledger devices in the post, physically modified so that connecting one to a computer would install malware. A list of verified home addresses belonging to people known to hold cryptocurrency is a uniquely valuable asset to a certain kind of criminal, and no amount of chip certification protects against someone knocking on your door.
Then, on 5 January 2026, Ledger disclosed a second exposure. A misconfigured API key on the Ledger website allowed unauthorised access to a cloud system at Global-e, the third-party payment processor acting as merchant of record for some Ledger.com purchases. Names, email addresses, postal addresses and phone numbers of affected customers were exposed. No payment information, credentials or recovery phrases were involved, and neither Ledger nor Global-e has disclosed how many people were affected.
Our conclusion is narrow and specific: buy Ledger hardware, but do not buy it from Ledger. GROOV in Christchurch is an authorised reseller importing directly from Ledger France, dispatching within 24 business hours for one to three day New Zealand delivery. PB Tech and Mighty Ape stock the entry models. All of them keep your street address in a New Zealand company's system rather than an offshore retailer's, and all of them bring you under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, which a direct import does not.
The closed-firmware question, fairly stated
Ledger's critics reduce this to "closed source, therefore untrustworthy", and that is too glib. The actual position is more interesting.
Certified secure elements generally come with non-disclosure obligations from the chip manufacturer, which historically forced hardware wallet makers to choose between a strongly protected chip and fully publishable firmware. Ledger chose the chip. Its argument is that an EAL6+ certified secure element, combined with Ledger Donjon — a genuine in-house attack laboratory — produces more real-world security than public review of a device built on a weaker microcontroller. Donjon's output supports that claim: it was Donjon researcher Baptiste Boileau who found and responsibly disclosed the laser fault-injection attack against Tangem's cards in 2026, notifying Tangem in February and publishing five months later.
The counter-argument is that this is unfalsifiable from the outside. You cannot verify that the device runs what Ledger says it runs, you cannot audit the code path that handles your seed, and the Ledger Recover episode showed that firmware capabilities can turn out to be broader than users assumed. Trezor has since demonstrated that the trade-off is not absolute — the Safe line pairs open firmware with an EAL6+ secure element, and the Safe 7 goes further by layering the auditable TROPIC01 chip alongside an Infineon Optiga element and a separate microcontroller.
Where we land: this is a legitimate philosophical disagreement between two competent vendors, not a case of one being safe and the other not. If you have no strong view, choose open firmware, because it is the decision you are least likely to regret and it costs you very little. If you already own a Ledger, there is no reason to replace it — change your assumptions about the privacy of your shipping address, not your hardware.
Buying and using a Ledger in New Zealand
Ledger is the one brand where New Zealand availability is genuinely good, which is worth 9.2 on our local-supply axis and materially affects the overall grade.
GROOV, based in Scarborough, Christchurch, is an authorised reseller importing new sealed stock directly from Ledger France. At our last check it listed the Nano S Plus at NZ$99, Nano X at NZ$199, Nano Gen5 at NZ$349, Flex at NZ$485 and Stax at NZ$779, with Afterpay and Zip available alongside the usual cards and wallets. Stock rotates and several models showed as sold out, so check before planning around a specific device. PB Tech, Mighty Ape and Computer Lounge carry the entry models in the NZ$95 to NZ$120 range with next-day delivery to most urban addresses.
On arrival, do three things. Let the device generate its own recovery phrase — if a phrase arrives pre-written, the wallet is not yours. Run Ledger Live's genuineness check, which verifies cryptographically rather than by looking at a sticker. From our testing notes
Of every device we set up for this site, the Nano S Plus was the one where a non-technical tester got from sealed box to verified receiving address fastest, without help, and without doing anything unsafe along the way. That counts for a great deal. The most secure device in the world is worthless if its owner gives up halfway through setup and leaves the balance on an exchange — which, in New Zealand, has repeatedly turned out to be the expensive option.

Which Ledger should I buy in New Zealand?
The Nano S Plus, for almost everybody. It carries the same CC EAL6+ secure element as models costing four times as much, it is the one Ledger reliably stocked at a New Zealand address — GROOV in Christchurch listed it at NZ$99 at our last check — and the only things you give up are Bluetooth and a battery, neither of which improves security. Move up to the Nano Gen5 at US$179 if you genuinely want the E-ink touchscreen and NFC; skip the Flex and Stax unless the larger screen matters to you more than NZ$400 does.
Is Ledger still safe after the data breaches?
The hardware and the keys were never affected by either incident, and that distinction matters. The July 2020 breach exposed roughly 270,000 customers' names, phone numbers and physical addresses from Ledger's e-commerce and marketing database; the January 2026 incident exposed similar data through its payment processor Global-e. No private keys, credentials or recovery phrases were involved in either. What was compromised is your privacy as a known crypto owner, which is a physical-security problem — and the reason we suggest buying from a New Zealand reseller rather than shipping to your home address.
Is Ledger open source?
Partly, and this is the main reason it does not top our security ranking. Ledger publishes a good deal of code, but the applications running on the secure element and the device's operating system are proprietary. The company's argument is that its EAL6+ certified chip plus a dedicated in-house attack lab delivers more real-world security than public review of weaker silicon would — and Ledger Donjon's track record of finding serious flaws in competitors' products, including the July 2026 Tangem laser attack, gives that argument some weight. But you are trusting a vendor's word rather than verifying it, and if that bothers you, Trezor is the alternative.
Can you stake crypto on a Ledger?
Yes, through Ledger Live, for several proof-of-stake chains including Ethereum, Solana and Polkadot. The delegation transaction is signed on the device, so your keys never leave the secure element while the rewards accrue — which is the best arrangement available, since staking on an exchange means handing over custody. What happens if my Ledger breaks or gets lost?
You buy a replacement and restore from your recovery phrase — and it does not have to be another Ledger, because the 24-word phrase follows the BIP39 standard and will restore in a Trezor, a BitBox, or a software wallet. Your coins were never on the device; they were always on the blockchain, and the device only ever held the key that proves they are yours. If both the device and the phrase are gone, nobody can help, including Ledger. This is exactly why we insist on a test restore before funding.
