Local guide — Nelson-Tasman

Crypto wallets in Nelson

Nelson has an unusually high concentration of remote workers and self-employed people for a city of its size, which changes the crypto picture: more people paid from offshore, more irregular income, and a real need to think about backup geography at the top of the South.

Where to buy locally in Nelson

No crypto retailer in Nelson, and no general electronics chain with the specialist range either, so this is entirely a delivery city. GROOV in Christchurch is the closest option and dispatches the full Ledger range within 24 business hours — same island, which helps. The Bitcoin Shop in Tauranga covers Blockstream Jade, Coldcard Q, Trezor and TinySeed steel plates, with the Cook Strait crossing adding a leg to the journey.

Delivery and courier reality

Plan for two to three working days rather than the one to three most resellers quote. Nelson is well connected by air freight but the geography means an extra handling step from most origins, and the Tasman district's rural addresses — Motueka, Māpua, out toward Golden Bay and the Marlborough Sounds side — carry rural delivery classifications adding a day or more. Golden Bay over the Tākaka Hill is effectively its own delivery situation and worth allowing extra time for.

Offsite backup options

There is no private vault in Nelson-Tasman, so offsite recovery phrase storage means a Westpac safe deposit box where a branch offers one, or the informal route. For a region this size the informal route is what almost everyone will use: a fireproof document safe at a friend's or family member's property. One geographic point worth thinking about — if both your copies are in the Nelson-Tasman region, a single significant weather event or a road closure over the Tākaka Hill can make both temporarily unreachable. A copy with family in Christchurch or across the Strait is a genuinely better arrangement.

The rule that applies everywhere

Your device and your written recovery phrase must never live in the same place. A burglary, a fire or a flood that takes one should not be able to take both. Two copies of the phrase, two different buildings, and a wipe-and-restore test before you fund anything. Our backup guide covers the mechanics.

The storage risk that is different here

Nelson-Tasman's specific exposures are flooding and, in the dry Nelson summers, fire. The August 2022 flooding across Nelson and the Tasman district displaced households and damaged properties, and the region has had significant wildfire events including the 2019 Pigeon Valley fire. Both destroy paper. Both are arguments for a stamped steel plate stored somewhere elevated and, ideally, in a different hazard zone. The region's high sunshine hours are also mildly relevant — a paper backup left where light reaches it will fade faster than you expect.

Local economy and community

Nelson's economy is horticulture, seafood, forestry, tourism and — increasingly — remote knowledge work, and it has one of the higher concentrations of self-employed and contracting workers in the country. Three consequences for crypto holders. Income paid from offshore is common, which makes accurate New Zealand dollar records more important rather than less. Irregular contracting income means lumpy purchase patterns that are hard to reconstruct after the fact. And from 1 April 2026 the CARF rules mean reporting platforms send their side of your transactions to Inland Revenue, so your own records are what reconcile the picture — log as you go rather than at year end.

Where you live changes two things: how quickly you can get a device, and what will eventually destroy a paper backup. Both are worth planning around in Nelson.

Device choice

Which device makes sense from Nelson

Our grading weights New Zealand availability at 15%, which matters more the further you are from a reseller. These are the four we would actually consider from here.

Order from GROOV in Christchurch for same-island dispatch, and allow two to three days rather than assuming the fast end of the range. Use steel rather than paper given the flood and fire history, and get your second copy off the top of the South entirely — family in Christchurch or across the Strait is a better arrangement than two copies in the same district.

Tax & records

The national rules that apply wherever you live

Cryptoasset tax is national, not regional, and two dates in 2026 changed the practical picture for everyone in New Zealand.

01

Holding is not taxable; selling may be

Inland Revenue treats cryptoassets as a form of property, and states that the tax treatment depends on the characteristics and use of the asset. Holding is not a taxable event, and moving between wallets you control is not a disposal. Selling, swapping, spending and receiving rewards can generate taxable income — New Zealand has no general capital gains tax, but gains are taxable where you acquired the asset intending to dispose of it.

02

CARF reporting since 1 April 2026

Reporting crypto-asset service providers must collect identity and tax residency information plus transaction details and report annually to IRD, with the first reports due by 30 June 2027 and information shared domestically and internationally. Your self-custody wallet is not a reporting entity — so IRD sees both ends of your activity and not the middle. Your records reconcile the gap. Full guide.

03

DIA becomes the single AML/CFT supervisor from 1 July 2026

Replacing the three-supervisor model split between the Reserve Bank, the FMA and the Department of Internal Affairs. Virtual asset service providers fall under DIA supervision. This affects the exchanges you buy from, not your wallet — check any platform on the Financial Service Providers Register before depositing.

04

GST and the Customs levy on device imports

Overseas suppliers with more than NZ$60,000 of annual New Zealand sales charge 15% GST at checkout on goods valued at NZ$1,000 or less. From 1 April 2026 Customs adds a Low-Value Goods levy of NZ$2.21 for air freight or NZ$2.09 for sea, plus GST. Worked examples.

The setup we would run from anywhere in New Zealand

Local detail matters for buying and for backup geography. The underlying structure does not change between Auckland and Invercargill, and it is worth stating plainly.

One hardware wallet holding whatever you consider savings, bought from the manufacturer or an authorised reseller and initialised by you. Recovery phrase written by hand, twice, in two different buildings, verified by a wipe-and-restore before a single dollar went in. One phone wallet with a deliberately small balance for what you actually spend and experiment with. Nothing left on an exchange beyond the hours it takes to settle a trade and withdraw. A sealed instruction with your will explaining what exists and how to reach it.

That arrangement costs about NZ$120 and one careful afternoon, and it beats the vast majority of crypto holders in this country. Everything else on this site is detail on those four moves — which device, which app, how to back it up, and what Inland Revenue expects.

New Zealand's exchange history is short and instructive: platforms here have a shorter half-life than the assets they hold.

Nelson FAQ

Crypto wallet questions from Nelson

How long does hardware wallet delivery take to Nelson?

Plan for two to three working days rather than the one to three quoted nationally. GROOV in Christchurch is the closest reseller and same-island dispatch helps. Rural Tasman addresses — Motueka, Māpua, Golden Bay over the Tākaka Hill — add a day or more and often a rural delivery surcharge. Golden Bay in particular is worth allowing extra time for.

Where should I keep an offsite backup if I live in Nelson?

Preferably outside the region. There is no private vault in Nelson-Tasman, and if both your copies are in the district then one weather event or a road closure over the Tākaka Hill can make both temporarily unreachable. A sealed steel plate with family in Christchurch or across the Strait satisfies the different-building requirement and the different-hazard-zone requirement at the same time.

Does Nelson's fire and flood history affect backup choices?

It should. The August 2022 flooding across Nelson and Tasman damaged properties and displaced households, and the 2019 Pigeon Valley fire showed the region's wildfire exposure. Both destroy paper completely. A stamped steel plate survives both, and the region's high sunshine hours are a smaller argument against paper too — ink fades faster where light reaches it. See our backup guide.

I am self-employed with income from overseas clients. What crypto records do I need?

The same records as anyone, kept more carefully because irregular income makes reconstruction harder. Inland Revenue treats cryptoassets as property and expects you to calculate the New Zealand dollar value of transactions. Record each purchase, sale, swap and reward with the NZD value on the day. From 1 April 2026 reporting platforms send their side to IRD under CARF, so your records need to reconcile. See our tax guide. General information, not tax advice.
