Local guide — Christchurch
Crypto wallets in Christchurch
Christchurch is the best city in New Zealand to buy a hardware wallet, because GROOV — an authorised Ledger reseller importing directly from Ledger France — dispatches from Scarborough. It is also where Cryptopia was based, which gives local holders the most direct possible lesson in why custody matters.

Where to buy locally in Christchurch
GROOV is based in Scarborough, Christchurch, and is an authorised Ledger reseller importing new sealed stock directly from Ledger France. At our last check it listed the Nano S Plus at NZ$99, Nano X at NZ$199, Nano Gen5 at NZ$349, Flex at NZ$485 and Stax at NZ$779, with dispatch of ready-to-ship items within 24 business hours and one to three working days for New Zealand delivery. Payment includes the usual cards plus PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, UnionPay and Shop Pay, with Afterpay and Zip available. Stock rotates and several models showed as sold out when we looked, so check before planning around a specific device. PB Tech also has a Christchurch presence carrying Ledger.
Delivery and courier reality
Being in the same city as the dispatch address is the fastest arrangement available anywhere in New Zealand for a hardware wallet, and it removes the import wait entirely. Wider Canterbury delivery is straightforward, though rural addresses out toward Darfield, Amberley and the Banks Peninsula pick up rural delivery classifications that add a day. For anything Bitcoin-only, The Bitcoin Shop dispatches from Tauranga in one to three working days.
Offsite backup options
Christchurch's offsite storage picture is thinner than Auckland's or Wellington's. The major banks have largely exited safe deposit boxes — ANZ, BNZ and the old National Bank handed their operations to New Zealand Vault, which has Auckland and Wellington facilities — leaving Westpac where branches offer them, at around NZ$200 including GST for a standard box. In practice most Christchurch holders use a fireproof document safe at a family member's or a workplace, and given the city's layout it is easy to find a genuinely different building without going far.
The rule that applies everywhere
Your device and your written recovery phrase must never live in the same place. A burglary, a fire or a flood that takes one should not be able to take both. Two copies of the phrase, two different buildings, and a wipe-and-restore test before you fund anything. Our backup guide covers the mechanics.
The storage risk that is different here
Christchurch residents need no lecture about seismic risk, and the relevant lesson for crypto backups is specific: after February 2011, large numbers of people could not access their own homes, offices or safe deposit boxes for extended periods, and paper documents were lost to collapse, water and demolition. A written recovery phrase in a red-zoned building was a recovery phrase that no longer existed. That argues strongly for a stamped steel plate rather than paper, and for a second copy well outside the central city — in Canterbury the geography makes that easy.
Local economy and community
Cryptopia was a Christchurch company. It was hacked in January 2019 for roughly NZ$30 million, never reopened, and its liquidation dragged on until December 2024 — nearly six years for customers to get any resolution. Almost every argument this site makes about self-custody was demonstrated here, at scale, to people in this city. Christchurch holders who lived through that generally do not need convincing that an exchange balance is a promise rather than a holding.
Device choice
Which device makes sense from Christchurch
Our grading weights New Zealand availability at 15%, which matters more the further you are from a reseller. These are the four we would actually consider from here.
| Wallet | Our grade | Maker RRP | NZ landed | Key storage | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ledger Nano S Plus Ledger · official site | A 8.8/10 | US$59 | NZ$99 at GROOV | ST33K1M5, CC EAL6+ | Cheapest credible cold storage available in NZ today |
| Trezor Safe 5 Trezor (SatoshiLabs) · official site | A 8.5/10 | US$169 | ≈NZ$330 landed | EAL6+ certified | Auditable firmware with a modern touchscreen |
| Blockstream Jade Plus Blockstream · official site | A 8.2/10 | US$149 | ≈NZ$290 landed | No SE — blind oracle design | Bitcoiners who want open hardware, stocked locally |
| Coldcard Q Coinkite (Canada) · official site | AA 7.9/10 | US$239 | ≈NZ$465 landed | Dual secure elements | Serious Bitcoin-only holders and multisig builders |
Buy from GROOV — authorised, local, NZ$99 for the Nano S Plus, dispatched within a day. Then take the Cryptopia lesson seriously and the earthquake lesson seriously: keys on a device you control, recovery phrase stamped into steel rather than written on paper, and the second copy in a different building on different ground.
Tax & records
The national rules that apply wherever you live
Cryptoasset tax is national, not regional, and two dates in 2026 changed the practical picture for everyone in New Zealand.
Holding is not taxable; selling may be
Inland Revenue treats cryptoassets as a form of property, and states that the tax treatment depends on the characteristics and use of the asset. Holding is not a taxable event, and moving between wallets you control is not a disposal. Selling, swapping, spending and receiving rewards can generate taxable income — New Zealand has no general capital gains tax, but gains are taxable where you acquired the asset intending to dispose of it.
CARF reporting since 1 April 2026
Reporting crypto-asset service providers must collect identity and tax residency information plus transaction details and report annually to IRD, with the first reports due by 30 June 2027 and information shared domestically and internationally. Your self-custody wallet is not a reporting entity — so IRD sees both ends of your activity and not the middle. Your records reconcile the gap. Full guide.
DIA becomes the single AML/CFT supervisor from 1 July 2026
Replacing the three-supervisor model split between the Reserve Bank, the FMA and the Department of Internal Affairs. Virtual asset service providers fall under DIA supervision. This affects the exchanges you buy from, not your wallet — check any platform on the Financial Service Providers Register before depositing.
GST and the Customs levy on device imports
Overseas suppliers with more than NZ$60,000 of annual New Zealand sales charge 15% GST at checkout on goods valued at NZ$1,000 or less. From 1 April 2026 Customs adds a Low-Value Goods levy of NZ$2.21 for air freight or NZ$2.09 for sea, plus GST. Worked examples.

General information only

The setup we would run from anywhere in New Zealand
Local detail matters for buying and for backup geography. The underlying structure does not change between Auckland and Invercargill, and it is worth stating plainly.
One hardware wallet holding whatever you consider savings, bought from the manufacturer or an authorised reseller and initialised by you. Recovery phrase written by hand, twice, in two different buildings, verified by a wipe-and-restore before a single dollar went in. One phone wallet with a deliberately small balance for what you actually spend and experiment with. Nothing left on an exchange beyond the hours it takes to settle a trade and withdraw. A sealed instruction with your will explaining what exists and how to reach it.
That arrangement costs about NZ$120 and one careful afternoon, and it beats the vast majority of crypto holders in this country. Everything else on this site is detail on those four moves — which device, which app, how to back it up, and what Inland Revenue expects.

Crypto wallet questions from Christchurch
Where can I buy a Ledger in Christchurch?
GROOV, based in Scarborough, is an authorised Ledger reseller importing new sealed stock directly from Ledger France. At our last check the Nano S Plus was NZ$99, Nano X NZ$199, Nano Gen5 NZ$349, Flex NZ$485 and Stax NZ$779, with dispatch within 24 business hours. Stock rotates, so check availability first. What happened to Cryptopia?
Cryptopia, a Christchurch-based exchange, was hacked in January 2019 for roughly NZ$30 million in cryptoassets. It never reopened, and its liquidation ran until December 2024 — nearly six years. It is the most significant crypto failure in New Zealand's history and the clearest local demonstration that an exchange balance is a claim against a business rather than a holding you control. See non-custodial wallets explained.
Should earthquake risk change how I back up a recovery phrase?
Yes, and Christchurch is the clearest case in the country. After February 2011 many people could not access homes, offices or deposit boxes for extended periods, and paper documents were lost to collapse, water and demolition. Use a stamped steel plate rather than paper, and keep the second copy in a different building on different ground. Our backup guide covers the options.
Can I buy a Trezor or Coldcard in Christchurch?
Not from a Christchurch retailer. GROOV carries Ledger only. For Trezor, Coldcard Q or Blockstream Jade, The Bitcoin Shop dispatches from Tauranga in one to three working days as an authorised Blockstream reseller, or you can import direct from the manufacturer with a one to three week wait. See our buying guide.
