Local guide — Hawke's Bay

Crypto wallets in Napier & Hastings

Hawke's Bay has the clearest case in New Zealand for flood-resistant recovery phrase storage. Cyclone Gabrielle destroyed paper records across the region in February 2023, and a written seed phrase in an affected property was a seed phrase that stopped existing.

Where to buy locally in Napier & Hastings

The twin cities have no crypto-specific retailer, so this is a delivery region. PB Tech has a Hawke's Bay presence carrying Ledger. GROOV in Christchurch dispatches the full Ledger range within 24 business hours, and The Bitcoin Shop in Tauranga — the closest of the two specialist resellers — covers Blockstream Jade, Coldcard Q, Trezor and TinySeed steel plates, which given the local flood history is the order we would place.

Delivery and courier reality

Courier into Napier and Hastings is straightforward, generally one to three working days from either specialist reseller. The region has a large rural and horticultural hinterland, and addresses out through the Heretaunga plains, Central Hawke's Bay and toward Wairoa carry rural delivery classifications adding a day and often a surcharge. Wairoa in particular can be affected by road closures after weather events, which is worth factoring in if you are waiting on something.

Offsite backup options

Hawke's Bay has no private vault operator, so offsite storage means a Westpac safe deposit box where a branch offers one, or the informal route. The informal route needs more thought here than elsewhere: the natural instinct is a relative's place across town, but if both properties are in the same flood-affected catchment you have two copies in one hazard zone. Look at the regional council's flood hazard mapping and put the second copy somewhere genuinely outside it — the elevated parts of Napier, or another region entirely.

The rule that applies everywhere

Your device and your written recovery phrase must never live in the same place. A burglary, a fire or a flood that takes one should not be able to take both. Two copies of the phrase, two different buildings, and a wipe-and-restore test before you fund anything. Our backup guide covers the mechanics.

The storage risk that is different here

This is the section that matters most for Hawke's Bay. Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023 flooded large parts of the region, destroyed homes and belongings across Esk Valley, parts of Napier and rural Hastings, and cut off communities entirely. Paper documents in affected properties were lost to water, silt and the demolition that followed. For crypto specifically, that means a written recovery phrase in an affected house was not merely inaccessible — it was destroyed, along with any device stored with it. If there is one region in New Zealand where a stamped steel plate stored above likely flood levels is the obvious default rather than an upgrade, it is this one. Paper is a poor choice here at any holding size.

Local economy and community

Hawke's Bay's economy is horticulture, wine, food processing and the Napier port, with a significant seasonal workforce. Two practical consequences for crypto holders. Seasonal and contract income makes lumpy purchase patterns common, and lumpy patterns are exactly where tax records get thin — Inland Revenue expects you to be able to calculate the New Zealand dollar value of your transactions, and from 1 April 2026 reporting platforms send their side to IRD under CARF. Log as you go. And a substantial share of the region's holders are on rural or semi-rural properties where outbuilding storage is the norm, which is another argument for metal over paper.

Where you live changes two things: how quickly you can get a device, and what will eventually destroy a paper backup. Both are worth planning around in Napier & Hastings.

Device choice

Which device makes sense from Napier & Hastings

Our grading weights New Zealand availability at 15%, which matters more the further you are from a reseller. These are the four we would actually consider from here.

Order a device and a TinySeed steel plate together from The Bitcoin Shop in Tauranga. Stamp the phrase into metal rather than writing it on a card. Check the regional flood hazard mapping before you decide where the second copy lives, and make sure it is not in the same catchment as the first. Gabrielle already made this argument better than we can.

Tax & records

The national rules that apply wherever you live

Cryptoasset tax is national, not regional, and two dates in 2026 changed the practical picture for everyone in New Zealand.

01

Holding is not taxable; selling may be

Inland Revenue treats cryptoassets as a form of property, and states that the tax treatment depends on the characteristics and use of the asset. Holding is not a taxable event, and moving between wallets you control is not a disposal. Selling, swapping, spending and receiving rewards can generate taxable income — New Zealand has no general capital gains tax, but gains are taxable where you acquired the asset intending to dispose of it.

02

CARF reporting since 1 April 2026

Reporting crypto-asset service providers must collect identity and tax residency information plus transaction details and report annually to IRD, with the first reports due by 30 June 2027 and information shared domestically and internationally. Your self-custody wallet is not a reporting entity — so IRD sees both ends of your activity and not the middle. Your records reconcile the gap. Full guide.

03

DIA becomes the single AML/CFT supervisor from 1 July 2026

Replacing the three-supervisor model split between the Reserve Bank, the FMA and the Department of Internal Affairs. Virtual asset service providers fall under DIA supervision. This affects the exchanges you buy from, not your wallet — check any platform on the Financial Service Providers Register before depositing.

04

GST and the Customs levy on device imports

Overseas suppliers with more than NZ$60,000 of annual New Zealand sales charge 15% GST at checkout on goods valued at NZ$1,000 or less. From 1 April 2026 Customs adds a Low-Value Goods levy of NZ$2.21 for air freight or NZ$2.09 for sea, plus GST. Worked examples.

The setup we would run from anywhere in New Zealand

Local detail matters for buying and for backup geography. The underlying structure does not change between Auckland and Invercargill, and it is worth stating plainly.

One hardware wallet holding whatever you consider savings, bought from the manufacturer or an authorised reseller and initialised by you. Recovery phrase written by hand, twice, in two different buildings, verified by a wipe-and-restore before a single dollar went in. One phone wallet with a deliberately small balance for what you actually spend and experiment with. Nothing left on an exchange beyond the hours it takes to settle a trade and withdraw. A sealed instruction with your will explaining what exists and how to reach it.

That arrangement costs about NZ$120 and one careful afternoon, and it beats the vast majority of crypto holders in this country. Everything else on this site is detail on those four moves — which device, which app, how to back it up, and what Inland Revenue expects.

New Zealand's exchange history is short and instructive: platforms here have a shorter half-life than the assets they hold.

Napier & Hastings FAQ

Crypto wallet questions from Napier & Hastings

Why is flood risk relevant to a crypto backup in Hawke's Bay?

Because Cyclone Gabrielle demonstrated it in February 2023. Flooding across Esk Valley, parts of Napier and rural Hastings destroyed homes and their contents, and paper documents in affected properties were lost to water, silt and subsequent demolition. A written recovery phrase in one of those houses was not just inaccessible — it no longer existed. A stamped steel plate stored above likely flood levels survives that. See our backup guide.

Where should I keep the second copy of my recovery phrase in Hawke's Bay?

Outside the flood hazard zone, which may mean further away than the obvious choice. Two copies at properties in the same catchment is two copies in one hazard. Check the regional council's flood hazard mapping, then choose somewhere elevated or in another region entirely — a family member's place in another city is a perfectly good answer if you can reach it within a day.

Where can I buy a hardware wallet in Napier or Hastings?

PB Tech has a Hawke's Bay presence carrying Ledger. For the wider range, The Bitcoin Shop in Tauranga is the closest specialist reseller, stocking Blockstream Jade, Coldcard Q, Trezor and TinySeed steel plates with one to three day delivery. GROOV in Christchurch covers the full Ledger line. Given the local flood history, order the steel plate in the same shipment.

I have seasonal income and buy crypto irregularly. Does that affect my tax records?

It makes them more important, not different. Inland Revenue treats cryptoassets as property and expects you to calculate the New Zealand dollar value of your transactions, and irregular purchases across a year are exactly where records get thin. From 1 April 2026 reporting platforms send their side of your activity to IRD under CARF, so your records need to reconcile. Log each purchase as you make it. See our tax guide. General information, not tax advice.
